Campaign Finance Reform

Public financing of elections would eliminate the corrupting influence of Big Money.

People are disenchanted with our electoral system because special interests backed by big donors call the shots. Democrats and Republicans are both dependent on the special interests who fund their campaigns. More and more of a candidate's time is spent raising funds, leaving less time to meet voters and discuss issues. And fewer and fewer people who aren't independently wealthy and who don't "network" with funding sources can afford to run for office or consider public service. It's a disgrace.

The answer is to eliminate officeholders' reliance on private campaign funding. A fair system of public funding would eliminate the corrupting influence of Big Money, free candidates to meet people face-to-face, and provide all serious candidates enough funding to get their message out and let the voters make informed decisions.

Proposition B (the proposed Fair Elections Act) is a good start, and Mary Auer endorses it. If voters pass Proposition B and elect Mary Auer to the state senate, Mary will oppose legislative attempts to weaken it.
