Gunfire has become a leading cause of death of young people in urban areas. Free democracies in Europe have effective gun control laws and much lower rates of crime and gun-related accidental death. Mary understands that the majority of firearms are owned by well-intentioned law-abiding citizens. But guns that families own in good faith to protect themselves and their loved ones often fall into the wrong hands and cause harm. Legitimate firearms are frequently stolen in burglaries, and stolen guns are often involved in deadly crimes. Poorly secured firearms also fall into the hands of innocent children and other untrained handlers, with tragic consequences. Mary Auer is active in Missourians Against Handgun Violence, and as a senator she will work for effective legislation to protect society from proliferant gun ownership.
